Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions answered by our laser expert.

What's the difference between diode and CO2 lasers?

Diode lasers (5-20W) are compact and great for wood/leather. CO2 lasers (40W+) excel at acrylic and glass but can't mark bare metal. See our testing methodology.

Is a 5W laser powerful enough?

For engraving wood, leather, paper—absolutely. For cutting 3mm+ plywood, consider 10W+. Use our Power Finder tool above for personalized recommendations.

What does "Class 1" safety mean?

Class 1 = fully enclosed, eye-safe without goggles. Class 4 = open frame, requires safety eyewear. We recommend Class 1 for beginners. See safety classes explained.

Can I engrave metal with a diode laser?

Standard diodes can't mark bare metal—need marking compound or anodized surfaces. For direct metal, get an IR laser like the xTool F1.

How do you test laser engravers?

Every laser undergoes our 5-phase protocol: beam quality, power verification, 6+ material tests, safety verification, software evaluation. Led by Sarah Kovacs.
